As far as I can tell though Raytheon and Lockheed Martin (who manufacture and integrate the missiles) don't have much business in China. As such I'm unclear how China's sanctions on those two will amount to much. With the Chinese stationing over 1,000 missiles across from Taiwan, I can't help but think that such a dressing down was more for show. Regardless of what the US sold Taiwan, he would have gotten it. But the missiles are something to keep an eye on for future sales.Chrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17114718781467202385noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3011828896482310388.post-418937259766164792010-01-30T21:08:56.696-05:002010-01-30T21:08:56.696-05:00The brunt of the Chinese concern, i'm sure, ha...The brunt of the Chinese concern, i'm sure, has to do with the advanced Patriot batteries going to Taiwan. The Chinese summoned the US embassador to dress him down this week -- specifically on that point.Jeff Schneiderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15194174101390679941noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3011828896482310388.post-74736283675609161132010-01-29T18:09:42.338-05:002010-01-29T18:09:42.338-05:00scooping Banyan = Pricelessscooping Banyan = PricelessJeff Schneiderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15194174101390679941noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3011828896482310388.post-22164707678914240842010-01-27T00:35:46.539-05:002010-01-27T00:35:46.539-05:00Great Insight Chris! Liberal Japan at this point has no clear direction I feel, having been on the margins of Japanese politics. And even if it did, governments can only move as fast as their population is willing. I'm not sure that your average Japanese citizen is running to China's warm embrace at this stage. I think at this point Japan has no choice but to engage more with China because of economics and the new Japanese government recognizes this. Japan needs some serious economic growth and China is the place to be. At the end of the day, this is a good step but things could quickly turn sour with a visit to a certain temple, North Korea acting up, or infringement on their EEZ. Future relations between the two will be like spring in Massachusetts in April: warm with a chance of snow or low temperature.

And yes, you guys are definitely worthy. It is I who am questionable in that regard.Chrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17114718781467202385noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3011828896482310388.post-40219427801573210952010-01-26T00:38:17.605-05:002010-01-26T00:38:17.605-05:00Chris -- Welcome to the Blogosphere! I think it's great that you're finally writing on China - who else to write on China if not you?

I wanted to ask you if you could have a post on China-ASEAN pact from January 1 2010 and what implications this has on the rest of us. I haven't seen much coverage of it in the news and I wonder why this is. Maybe because it was on New Year's and we were all sobering up? :) It would be intersting to hear you opinion and thoughts on this.

Big hugs from London! UK misses you.
Asia B.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05640979924877980186noreply@blogger.com
